Stinky Smells In Your Car

There isn’t a polite way to say it. At times my car reeks of footy boots, the kids' decaying food and damp floor mats. You'd think our car was the rubbish tip the way it’s treated by hubby and the kids. It's not the best feeling driving around and wondering where the putrid stench is coming from … then realising it's from your very own vehicle!

Today I am going to tell you how best to freshen your ride and prevent those funky smells. Your kids, depending on their age, are much more capable than you give them credit for. You could stop them eating in the car, but this can be tough. Turn it into a game, with a reward for whose side of the car is the tidiest. I have a friend who keeps bin bags in an organiser which is neatly strapped to the back of the front passenger seat. Her boys race each other after every car trip to see who gets their side of the car the cleanest, the quickest! My friend says having bin bags so close by helps her keep on top of the mess before it builds up.

Give the car a good clean by vacuuming the seats, wiping down the dashboard, taking out the mats and emptying the trash. You'll find most damage in between the seats, from food crumbs and spills to accidental vomit and pee. Make sure to get under the seats and in between the cushions – leave no space untouched. Floor mats are the collectors of grime, dirt and water. They catch whatever is stuck to your shoes, be it chewing gum or dog poo. Shake them out, then let them air and dry. Lastly, remove everything that doesn’t belong in the car, including junk in the boot and glove box.

When you are driving open the windows when you can, enjoy the feel of the wind and fresh air. Avoid air fresheners too as their toxic smells only mask the cause. It’s much better to use something more natural like charcoal, ground coffee or citrus peels. Keeping natural disinfectant wipes in the car isn't a bad idea either. You can give the dash and console a quick wipe down while you're in traffic or waiting for the kids' footy/netball training to finish up.
