Safe Alternatives to Getting Rid of Pongy Smells

Fun Cleaning Fact: Do you know that scent is the most powerful memory trigger?

Every home has a signature smell. Some have a fresh lemony scent, while some will have a stronger and more pungent characteristic. You grab that chemically riddled deodorising spray in the hopes to freshen your space. Sadly, the chemicals are just as toxic as the foul odour you were trying to solve.

What if I told you that there's a better way to deal with odours around the home, and no, I'm not talking about going the chemical heavy route. Do yourself a favour and ditch those toxic spray cans because we're going for homemade safe alternatives to rid your home of pongy odours...

Odorous Carpet

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda all over the carpet. Pay extra attention to high traffic and stained areas. Cordon off the carpet for a few hours, making sure to keep pets and children off the whole time. Thoroughly vacuum to remove dust, loose soil, dirt, and the baking powder. You can add essential oils to your liking to add some scent.

Stink in The Sink

Douse hot water around the sink and the garbage disposal to kill germs and bacteria, and also to loosen oil and grease. Drop a few orange peels in the garbage disposal and let the machine do its job. This will eliminate the odour and gunk build-up in the garbage disposal unit. Other citrus fruits can also be used such as lime, grapefruit, or lemon. Also, drop a few of the peels in the trash can to freshen the bin.

Musty Upholstery

Mist upholstery with a solution made up of 1/2 cup of high-proof vodka, 1/2 cup distilled water, 25 drops of lavender essential oil, 25 drops of lemon essential oil and 10 drops of tea tree oil. Be careful not to soak the upholstery. Vodka is a potent bacteria killer, which is usually the root cause of foul odour. This is also effective on linens, pillows and mattresses.

Toilet Smell

Pour half a cup of baking soda directly into the toilet bowl, put in 10-50 drops of tea tree essential oil followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Spray using a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar in and around the bowl. Go on a 30-minute coffee break then come back to scrub the stains. Then flush the nasty smell away.

Freaky Fridge

Wipe the inside of the fridge with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar, while discarding spoiled and expired food items as you go. Saturate a ball of cotton with lemon juice and leave in the fridge overnight. Wake up to a fresh lemon scented fridge in the morning.

Stressful Mattress

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to baking soda and sprinkle the mix on the mattress. Let it sit for thirty minutes then vacuum thoroughly. The mattress will be fresher for it and the lavender essential oil will not only kill dust mites but will also induce better sleep and reduces stress and anxiety. Just make sure to use a vacuum with HEPA filter to avoid “recycling” dust mites

Air Freshener

Freshen up indoor air without the toxic nastiness by using this simple air freshener. Mix 8 drops of lavender oil, 4 drops bergamot essential oil, and 1/2 cup distilled water in a spray bottle. Set it on mist and use it around the house, making extra passes on odour prone areas. You can mix and match essential oils to achieve a variety of scents to match your taste.

So there you have it, safe homemade freshening solutions for the kitchen, lounge area, bedroom, and bathroom. You can keep your home fresh and odour-free through general tidiness, regular vacuuming, not smoking in the house, and taking out the trash on a nightly basis. Hiring professional cleaning experts like Electrodry will significantly improve indoor air quality and prevent stench buildup. Add some potpourri, perhaps a bowl of fresh fruits and flowers and your home will be smelling as fresh as paradise.
