7 Steps to Make Your Bathtub Sparkle

After a long day, a soothing bath is one of life’s little luxuries. You draw the bath, light the candles and hit play on a relaxing playlist.

Then you spot the line of grime around the edge, the soap scum and realise your tub doesn’t look so white anymore.

Here is an easy way to get your bathtub bright again.

The Fastest Way to Clean A Bathtub

Cleaning a bathtub can be hard work. Grime build-up aside, it’s an arduous and awkward job that most of us avoid or don’t do properly.

A dirty bathtub is home to soap scum, mineral deposits from water build-up, limescale, body oils, dust and dirt, none of which you want to share your relaxing bath with.

How often you clean the bathtub depends on how much you use it. If you or the children bathe in it regularly, you should be cleaning it once a week.

The good news is, once you’ve given it a thorough clean and scrub, doing a weekly maintenance clean shouldn’t be too hard.

Here is what you need:

Step 1

Remove everything out of the bathtub and its surrounds, such as bath toys, razors etc. Wipe down shampoo bottles to remove any soap scum. I recommend soaking bath toys in boiling water while you’re cleaning the tub. Wipe down all surfaces with a towel so you have a fresh surface to begin with.

Step 2

Fill a bucket with hot water then pour it all over the bathtub.

Step 3

Sprinkle baking soda on the surfaces. Have a line of grime around the tub? Create a paste of baking soda and water (1/2 cup to ¼ cup water) and apply it to the line. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing off. A cleaning product like Gumption will also do a great job. Gumption paste can get a little hard, so wet your cloth with warm water first before applying – this should make it a smooth consistency.

Step 4

Fill the bucket with hot water and a couple of squirts of dishwashing detergent. Dip your brush or sponge into the solution and scrub the tub. Using a broom for this job is also an effective method – it’s convenient and saves you from being on your hands and knees scrubbing. Just make sure it’s a fresh/clean broom or one used for this purpose only.

Step 5

Rinse everything off using either the bucket or water from the faucet.

Step 6

Use a dry towel to clean the area – take extra care here to avoid the tub being too slippery. We recommend using a microfibre cloth on the taps, for extra shine.

Step 7

Don’t forget the drains either; pour boiling water down the drain, followed by ¼ cup baking soda then ½ cup white vinegar. Let it sit for 15 minutes before pouring boiling water into the drain again to rinse.
