We’ve all seen pictures of gorgeous kitchens on social media, stylishly designed and with appliances perfectly in place. Reality can be a little messier. Although those Pinterest images are amazing, most of us don’t have the interior design or handyman skills to recreate the look and so we end up with a case of major #pinterestfail.
You can still give your kitchen a mini makeover with a beginner’s skill set and a modest budget. Here’s how.
Update Your Appliances
When was the last time you updated your appliances? This doesn’t need to be an expensive exercise - if you’re smart and keep an eye out for sales, you can pick up a new kettle, toaster or blender for a steal! Try to go for something other than the classic white or stainless steel when you’re shopping. A pop of colour is a welcome sight in a neutral kitchen.
Pretty in Paint
It’s time to rethink how you use your paint. Your favourite shade isn’t just for the walls anymore. Old timber cupboards can get a new lease on life with a lick of colour. Greys are popular at the moment, particularly if you have light-coloured benchtops. Different shades of blue are in fashion, too. Paint companies like Dulux provide how-to-guides for these types of projects on their websites.
Freshen Up the Flooring
Tiled or timber floors can get forgotten in the makeover process, but a thorough clean can completely refresh the look of the kitchen. You could also have your tiled grout recoloured – an Electrodry tile and grout clean and recolour could make a significant difference to an old kitchen. We do timber floor refresh or sanding services as well, to bring back the wood floor you once loved.
Be a space-saving genius
Install a timber floating shelf on a spare wall or above the window to store crockery, pots or even items like frames, plants or candles to give the space a personal touch. Think about how you’re going to use the shelf before you install. Do you need thicker timber to hold slightly heavier items? Will you be using the shelf items regularly? Remember not to install the shelf too high if you know you’ll be reaching for it daily.
Contain Your Excitement
Take a leaf out of Marie Kondo’s book and get that pantry properly organised! Investing a bit of time now to get your items into labelled containers will make getting dinner prepared on busy weeknights so much easier. Pull everything out of your pantry, organise into sections and contain away! Remember to place regularly used items close to the front. One idea I loved during my research was using an over the door kitchen basket in the pantry to store the kids’ snacks. For me, this meant less bulky boxes, quick access and it made it so much simpler to see what I need to grab next time I was at the shops.
Get a Handle on Things
Another job that’s easy to DIY is replacing the handles and tapware in the kitchen. Make sure you pick tapware that matches your current colour scheme and has the functionality your sink needs – knobs or levers need to be far away enough from the wall so you can turn them easily and you need to make sure the spout will sit neatly within the basin. Your cabinet handles can also be replaced with something more modern. If you pick the right handles, it should be a simple job to replace them. Make sure you do your research first at the hardware store.
The right colour choices can definitely add some spice to your kitchen while taking some time to get organised will vastly improve your kitchen’s functionality. Cooking in your kitchen just got a whole lot more exciting!
